Transportation is the sector with the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the City of Cupertino—and emissions from this sector have been mostly increasing since 1990.
The City has 5 measures in our CAP to address this:
Each measure is supported by many actions that are detailed in our CAP 2.0 transportation chapter.
Based on our calculations, switching from gas powered to electric vehicles will be the leading solution. Increasing rideshares, carpooling, and public transportation will have the second largest impact. Surprisingly, switching gas powered off-road equipment, such as leaf blowers, lawn mowers, and generators, is the third most important solution.
Note that due to evolving science, transportation emissions have increased but vehicle miles traveled is relatively the same. With this new calculation methodology the City anticipates that an even larger gap must be filled to reach carbon neutrality for this sector.
