Cupertino residents have access to a local, curbside composting program run by the City in partnership with Recology. This initiative allows residents to dispose of food scraps, food-soiled paper, plants, and yard waste in their green organics cart, which are then collected by Recology and converted into nutrient-rich compost. Composting helps keep organic material out of landfills, reducing the emission of methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gases.
Residents can request a free kitchen pail on the City’s website here to help collect food scraps, and are encouraged to follow best practices for reducing mess and odor, such as using compostable liners, regular cleaning, and keeping the cart lid closed to avoid attracting pests.
By participating in composting, residents not only help reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also produce valuable compost for use in gardens and farms, enhancing soil quality and water retention.
